On the eighth day of Navratri, there is a tradition to worship Maa Mahagauri, the eighth form of Maa Durga. This day is also called Mahashtami. It is believed that Goddess Durga appeared on Ashtami Tithi to kill the demons.

According to the story of the mythological Shiva Purana, when Mahagauri was only eight years old, she started clearly remembering the events of her previous birth. From that time onwards she accepted Lord Bholenath as her husband. And she also started doing severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Due to fasting and waterless penance for years, his body turned black. Seeing their penance, Lord Shiva became pleased and purified them with the holy water of Ganga. After which Mother Mahagauri became bright with light and radiance like lightning. Along with this, she became famous by the name of Mahagauri. After killing all the demons in the form of Kaalratri, Mother got excited and performed severe penance for many days to get her white skin and offered Arghya to Lord Brahma. Pleased with Goddess Parvati, Lord Brahma advised her to take bath in the Manasarovar river of the Himalayas. Following the advice of Lord Brahma, Mother Parvati took bath in Manasarovar. After bathing in this river, Mother’s form became glorious. Therefore this form of Mother was called Mahagauri. Let us tell you that Mother Parvati is the form of Goddess Bhagwati.

Goddess Mahagauri is very simple, charming and cool in appearance. His vehicle is Taurus. The Goddess takes upon herself the responsibility of fulfilling the wishes of the devotees who worship Goddess Mahagauri. Goddess Mahagauri is a four-armed goddess. He has Abhaya Mudra in his upper right hand and a trident in his lower hand. Mother Mahagauri is holding Damru in her upper left hand and Vara Mudra in her lower hand.


Mahagauri’s clothes and jewelery are all white, hence Mother Mahagauri loves white color very much. Even in the puja, white things are offered to Maa Mahagauri and white colored Prasad is also offered. Because of his love for white colour, he is also called Shwetambardhara. Mother’s vehicle is Taurus. The form of the Goddess appears compassionate, loving, calm and gentle. This form of Mother is very captivating. Performing Durgashtami puja has been said to be beneficial for the destruction of all sins. Ashtami puja is considered to have special significance during Durga Puja in Navratri. By worshiping Mahagauri, even impossible tasks become possible, all sins are destroyed, happiness and good fortune are attained and every wish is fulfilled. This form of mother gives salvation. The worship of Mahagauri is related to the shadow planet Rahu. According to Kaalpurush theory, planet Rahu is related to the sixth and eighth house in the horoscope. Therefore, the worship of the Goddess is related to destruction of enemies, destruction of diseases, marriage, obstacles in marriage, household and age.
