The two-headed bird Gandaberunda or Berunda appears in mythology and is considered a form of Lord Vishnu. The two-headed Gandaberund is the state symbol of Karnataka but its origins go back to mythology. It has a deep historical connection with Mysore, Karnataka. Gandaberund is mentioned in Hindu mythology from the Vijayanagar Empire, which later became the symbol of the Mysore Empire. For more than 500 years now, this two-headed bird has been synonymous with the royal history of Mysore.
According to historian PV Nanjaraje Urs, Gandaberund was first used as a sign on coins in the mints of Vijayanagar, many of which still exist. Elephants are sometimes depicted on the paws and beaks to show the strength of Gandaberund. It is also shown being carried. It was accepted as a symbol of the union of power of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. According to mythology, when Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Narasimha to kill Hiranyakashyap, the father of his devotee Prahlad, his anger continued even after the death of Hiranyakashyap. Did not decrease. All the gods became frightened by this and requested Lord Shiva to intervene. After this, Lord Shiva came in the form of an elephant-headed lion to pacify Narasimha but soon he himself lost his temper. Sharabha ji had prayed to pacify Lord Narasimha, but he did not calm down. In this form, he approached Lord Narasimha and praised him, but Narasimha’s anger did not subside. Then Sharabh ji wrapped Narasimha ji in his tail and flew away. After this, Narasimha ji calmed down and apologized to Sharbhavatar. In such a situation, Lord Vishnu had to take the form of Gandaberund, a bird with big wings and two heads facing in the opposite direction, which captured Sharba in its beak to subdue him. This two-headed bird is considered to have immense magical power and is considered the most sacred animal in the country. Present in sculptures of many temples across India.
Now historically speaking, the first king of Mysore, Yadurai Wodeyar, started a victory march to consolidate his position. According to historian PV Nanjaraje Urs, during this journey he met an ascetic and gave a red cloth to the king. The king worshiped it and accepted it as a blessing. After this he achieved all the achievements. This red cloth then became the royal flag of Mysore. Then ‘Satyamevodhabhavaramyaham’ along with the image of the mythological bird was added to this flag to add to the principles of Dharma and Truth. Mysore continued to use the flag as its state symbol after independence and when it became a part of Karnataka So Gandabherund became the official symbol of the state. Presently it is the official symbol of the Government of Karnataka. MLAs of both houses of the state wear a gold-coated badge bearing the Gandbherund when attending sessions.
