The festival of lights symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Lord Vishnu told Goddess Lakshmi that even though you provide happiness and prosperity, if any woman does not get the happiness of motherhood, her womanhood remains incomplete. Therefore your worship cannot be considered the best. Hearing this, Mother Lakshmi was very disappointed and went to Mother Parvati to express her grief. Seeing the pain of Mother Lakshmi, Mother Parvati handed over her son Ganesha to her as an adopted son. Pleased with this, the Mother announced that a person would attain wealth and prosperity only by worshiping Lord Ganesha along with Goddess Lakshmi. Since then, Lord Ganesha is worshiped along with Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali.
