Garlic and onion are hot in nature, which works to generate heat in the body, so both of these are prohibited to be used in food in the month of Sawan. According to Ayurveda, garlic and onion are a medicine which is consumed to improve the body. But people include it in the daily diet, which causes harm instead of benefit. Ayurveda does not recommend including garlic and onion in the diet regularly because its excessive consumption also kills the good bacteria formed in the body. Onion and garlic are very hot which generate heat in the body. Therefore, people who meditate etc. do not consume it. Its consumption also increases anger and anxiety. According to Ayurveda, not eating onion and garlic can benefit your body in many ways. Actually, both onion and garlic come under the category of rajasic food due to their characteristics like pungent smell. Rajasic food awakens rajasic quality, which increases anger, jealousy, pride, desire for publicity, self-centeredness and desire for worldly pleasures in the mind. Apart from this, it belongs to the Allium family and is very rich in phenolic phytochemicals, which act as androgenic, i.e. sexual stimulants in the body. By giving up onion and garlic for a month, your body goes into detoxification mode and then it uses more of the fat and energy stored in the body. In a way, it works as a scrubbing and cleansing for the body. This keeps obesity, sugar and stomach problems under control. According to religious texts, Amavasya date is related to ancestors. On this day Pind Daan, Shradh of ancestors are performed. On this day onion-garlic should not be consumed. Poornima date is on the last day of every month. Hence, this day is also considered to be of special importance. On this day Poornima is considered to be related to the moon. Hence, on this day one should avoid eating onion-garlic. Ekadashi date is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Fast is observed on this day. This is the reason why onion and garlic should not be eaten at all on this day. Also avoid non-vegetarian food on this day. Ganesh Chaturthi festival is celebrated twice every month. On this day Ganesh is worshipped. On this day also do not consume garlic-onion in the food. Pradosh fast is observed on Trayodashi date of every month. Lord Shiva is worshipped on this day. Some people also observe fast on this day. Hence, on this day consumption of garlic and onion is prohibited.
