What is your favorite genre of music?
Just like there are some types of singing styles, similarly in today’s modern era there are some words, some methods, ways of playing or in other words some styles. Different musicians (singers, lyricists, instrumentalists) have their own styles. But if their music is timed differently and put under different emotions, then those styles are called sangati styles.
I like Hindustani music very much. And in that too the Dhamar-Hori style.
This style has a lot of similarities with Dhrupad except the Dhrupad taal. It is a very organized style and has a cycle of 14 taals, which are used irregularly. Its compositions are generally devotional in nature and are related to Lord Krishna. Some of the more popular songs are related to the Holi festival, due to which many of its compositions have Shringar Rasa. Dhamar compositions are mostly related to Holi and the Leelas of Radha-Krishna, but due to the development of this style in the medieval period, the compositions also included subjects related to the praise and prestige of kings and rulers. Dhrupad is considered to be the highest class song type of Hindustani Raga-Darbari music. Dhrupad singing is based on elements like purity of raga, correct pronunciation of notes and words, gamak, rhythm and harmony etc. Perhaps the formation of the basic elements of this style is possible only through the proper use of swara, shabd, taal and bhaav. In Dhrupad style, a song based on Dhamar taal is also called Dhamar. The text of Dhamar is related to the antics of Krishna teasing the cowherd boys during Holi, the festival of colors in the spring season. It is considered relatively light, soft and romantic music. It feels great to listen to these songs during the festival of Holi.
