How old is the secret of the auspicious Swastika?

The symbol of Swastik is considered to be a symbol of auspiciousness. The word Swastik is considered to be a combination of ‘Su’ and ‘Asti’. ‘Su’ means auspicious and ‘Asti’ means to be. This means that the basic meaning of Swastik is ‘good luck’ or ‘good luck’. The four arms of Swastik indicate the four movements – Naraka, Triyancha, Manushya and Dev Gati. The importance of Swastika is full of historical evidence. It is mentioned many times in Mohenjodaro, Harappa culture, Ashoka’s inscriptions, Ramayana, Harivansh Purana, Mahabharata etc.

Which colour of Swastika is considered auspicious?

Red and yellow colored swastikas are considered very auspicious. Most people make swastikas with turmeric. Making a yellow colored swastika on the wall of the north-east or north direction brings happiness and peace in the house. Why is the swastika a Nazi symbol?

During that time, so much violence took place under Hitler’s rule that it came to be called a symbol of violence. After the Nazi incident, they removed this and adopted the symbol of Eagle.

There are examples of Swastik symbols in other countries too. Swastik is recognized not only in India but also in many other countries of the world in various forms. Swastik is prevalent in some form or the other in countries like Germany, Greece, France, Rome, Egypt, Britain, America, Scandinavia, Sicily, Spain, Syria, Tibet, China, Cyprus and Japan. In Nepal, it is worshipped by the name of ‘Heramba’. In Burma, it is known as ‘Priyenne’. In Egypt, Swastik is worshipped by the name of ‘Acton’. In ancient Europe, there was a civilization called Celt, which spread from Germany to England. It considered Swastik as the symbol of Sun God. According to it, Swastik was also the symbol of all the four seasons of Europe. Swastik has been quite popular in Egypt and America. People of both these places used to associate the pyramid with reincarnation.  In ancient Egypt, Osiris was considered the god of rebirth and he was always described as a star with four arms and the pyramid was depicted with a cross on it. In this way we see that the Swastika has been prevalent in the civilizations of every country since ancient times. In the countries of Central Asia, the Swastika symbol is considered to be auspicious and a symbol of good fortune. In ancient Iraq (Mesopotamia), the Swastika symbol was used to achieve victory over weapons. In an exhibition going on at the museum in the city of Vratsa in North-West Bulgaria, some 7,000 years old clay artifacts are kept on which the Swastika symbol is engraved. These artifacts were found during the excavation of a religious Yagya Kund in a village called Altimir near the city of Vratsa.

Swastik has 2 straight lines crossing each other, which turn forward. Even after this, these lines turn a little further at their ends. This shape of Swastik can be of two types. The first Swastik in which the lines point forward and turn towards our right. This is called ‘Dakshinavarta Swastik’. The second shape turns towards our left pointing backwards, this is called ‘Vamavarta Swastik’.The initial shape of Swastik is in the form of a vertical line from east to west and above it another horizontal line from south to north and one line is added from east at the ends of its four arms. After this a point is placed in the middle of all the four lines.
It is customary to make Swastik in the size of 7 fingers, 9 fingers or 9 inches. On the occasion of auspicious works, there is a tradition of making Swastik at the place of worship and on the door frame.

In Hinduism, Swastik is considered a symbol of power, good luck, prosperity and auspiciousness. Swastik is used to improve the Vastu of the house. Swastik symbol is considered to be a lucky object. Using Swastik takes away the negative energy from the house.Swastik contains the powers of Lord Ganesha and Narada. Swastik is considered to be the seat of Lord Vishnu and Sun. The left part of Swastik is the place of Ganesha’s power, the Beej Mantra ‘Gam’. The 4 dots in it are inhabited by Gauri, Earth, Kachhapa and Anant deities. This auspicious symbol has a special place in the worship of Ganesha, the tradition of worshipping account books along with Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, grandeur and prosperity. The vertical line of Swastik is a symbol of the origin of the universe and the horizontal line is a symbol of the expansion of the universe. The central point of Swastik is the navel lotus of Vishnu and the 4 dots are for the four directions.  In Rigveda, Swastika is considered the symbol of Sun. Swastika indicates the importance of all directions. It is used for worshipping the gods ruling the four directions – Agni, Indra, Varuna and Som, and for obtaining the blessings of the Saptarishis. Swastik’s 4 arms indicate 4 movements- Naraka, Triyancha, Manushya and Dev movement, while the time cycle includes seasons and time. It is also a symbol of 4 Yugas- Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapar Yuga and Kali Yuga. Its initial shape is similar to the plus sign in mathematics, hence it is also considered a symbol of addition or union. Swastik is formed by adding one line each on the plus sign. Swastik is considered a symbol of Vastu in Vastu Shastra.  Its design is such that it looks the same from every direction. All kinds of Vastu defects are removed by placing ashta dhatu on both sides of the main door of the house and a copper swastika in the middle above it. Making a swastika of panch dhatu and placing it on the door frame after doing praan pratishtha gives good results. To remove Vastu defects, making a swastika 9 inches long and wide with sindoor transforms negative energy into positivity. Swastika made of roli, turmeric or sindoor in religious functions gives self-satisfaction. On festivals, a swastika made with kumkum, sindoor or rangoli along with rangoli outside the door is auspicious. By making it, gods and goddesses enter the house. Swastika made on Guru Pushya or Ravi Pushya provides peace. The idol of any god placed on top of a swastika is immediately pleased. Apart from this, for the fulfillment of wishes, an inverted Swastika is made with cow dung or Kanku in the temple. Then when the wish is fulfilled, a straight Swastika is made there. During Pitru Paksha, girls make a Swastika with cow dung while making Sanja. This brings auspiciousness, peace and prosperity in the house and also the blessings of ancestors are received.
