In ancient times, when the Narmada River decided to become like the Ganga River and started doing penance to Brahma Ji. Brahma Ji is the only God who is famous for giving boons. The Narmada River did penance to Brahma Ji for many years so that  Brahmaji was pleased.
Pleased, Lord Brahma asked Mother Narmada to ask for a groom.  Narmadaji said – ‘Brahma ji!  If you are pleased with me, then make me a destroyer of sins and a giver of salvation like Gangaji. Brahmaji said smilingly, ‘If any other god can become equal to Lord Shiva, any other man can become equal to Lord Vishnu.  Any other woman can be equal to Parvatiji, any other city can be equal to Kashipuri and any other river can be equal to Ganga.’ Hearing this from Brahmaji, Narmada renounced his boon and went to Kashi and there Shivalinga was installed in Pilpilatirtha.  After establishing the temple, she started doing penance. Lord Shankar was very pleased with her penance and asked her to ask for a boon.  Narmada said ‘Lord!  What is the benefit of asking for an insignificant groom?  May my devotion remain only in your lotus feet.’ According to mythology, despite being the daughter of Bholenath, Mother Narmada had performed rigorous penance for Bholenath for a long time, due to which, Bholenath was pleased and gave her a boon and said that in Kalyug, I will be with you every day.  I will reside in pebbles.
