Lakshmi chose Vishnu because he not only has penance and knowledge, he has also conquered anger and lust. He is not a renunciant but is detached. He has the conduct of Dharma as well as the conduct of love. His opulence is not dependent on others. There is age and modesty in him but his appearance is auspicious.
Goddess Lakshmi appeared from water. Water is the only one among the five basic elements of creation, which has been given the name of life. if there is water there is life. It is from water that life originates, nourishes and survives. In this sense Lakshmi is the goddess of life who nurtures and protects the world. This is also the reason for Lakshmi choosing Vishnu. Both are the guardian couple of the world and both have association with the ocean. Devi Sagar is born and Vishnu is Narayan and is the resident of the ocean of water. In this way, both of them, by connecting with life in the form of water, illuminate all living beings with the light of life. The story of the gods and demons jointly churning the ocean to obtain nectar is available in almost all the texts of Sanatan Dharma. In this churning, among the total 14 gems that came out along with the nectar, one was Lakshmi, the most beautiful and interesting story of whose appearance is told in Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran dedicated to the devotion of Vishnu. In this story, why after the appearance, Lakshmi ji chose Vishnu, ignoring the rest of the gods, sages and demons, the great mantra of attaining Lakshmi is hidden in this.
According to the story of the eighth canto of Bhagwat, in the churning of mudra, Halahal poison came out first and nectar at the end. It is an indication that in every work, before achieving the final goal, one gets the poison of failure in the beginning. If a person does not get distracted by this and continues his efforts, then gems of small successes start coming easily before the desired goal is achieved.
In the same sense, after the poison, Kamdhenu, Ucchai:shrava horse, Airavat elephant, Kaustubh Mani, Kalpavriksha and Apsaras emerged respectively. This symbolizes that only water fulfills all wishes. Kamdhenu and Kalpavriksha are examples of this. The speed of life and the splendor of life also depend on water. The appearance of horse and elephant are symbols of this. The beauty of Apsaras is unique because they are created from the juice of water. Because the beauty of the world lies in water. Mani is a symbol of water being a gem giver. That is why one name of Sagar is Ratnakar. The moon, the provider of light at night, and the food and medicines that nourish and protect life, have also emerged from water because only through water is light of the world and satisfaction possible. Water is wealth, that is why Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, originated from water.
We can get wealth through hard work i.e. penance, but if anger is not controlled then we lose even the wealth we have. In this sense, only the one who is able to control anger with hard work gets ‘Lakshmi’. Many people earn money through knowledge but their attachment is not able to give that money the dignity of ‘Lakshmi’. Wealth acquired only through knowledge is not Lakshmi, but true Lakshmi is detached from wealth. This is also true knowledge. In this sense, Lakshmi is accessible only to those who are unattached to the wise. It is necessary to be ambitious for wealth. Therefore, people full of ambition earn enough money but even that money is not ‘Lakshmi’. Because excess wealth makes a person luxurious and lustful and makes the person lose the ‘Shri’ of wealth. Therefore, Lakshmi favors only those who, by becoming important, have conquered their desires. Those whose wealth is dependent on others, that is, those who enjoy the wealth of their forefathers, their wealth is definitely not Lakshmi.
True Lakshmi can reside only in the opulence of the dependent people, earned through hard work, not in the glory of the dependents. Wealth comes only through religious conduct i.e. duty and good conduct, but the wealth of those who are devoid of love is not called ‘Lakshmi’. Real Lakshmi is achieved only by the one who behaves with love towards all living beings along with his duty. Even a renunciant of the world never has Lakshmi. This is because there is no salvation in life just by sacrifice. For this reason, in the scriptures, the threefold effort for salvation, along with religion, artha and kama, has been said to be the only effort.
Longevity means health. Only a healthy person can earn money. But that wealth attains the glory of ‘Lakshmi’ only when one is full of modesty i.e. good character. In which importance is given to auspicious attire along with health and modesty. Which means that those who do not live well, never get Lakshmi.
In the end, we get to learn that when today’s boys and girls go to get married, they do not see how much they have in common. For example, both Vishnu and Lakshmi are born from water. There is a lot of similarity in the qualities of both of them. That is why both of them are together observing the world. If there was no similarity in their qualities, they would have kept finding faults in each other. Similarly, humans should also learn something from them.
