Apart from gold and silver, what to buy on Dhanteras and why?

Diwali festival starts from Dhanteras itself.  On the day of Dhanteras, apart from gold and silver, people buy items like brooms and utensils.  This is considered very auspicious.  Have you ever wondered why these special items are purchased on this special day?

If you want to buy only gold on Dhanteras, then know that buying silver on this day is considered best.  Although anything can be bought as per one’s wish on this day, but according to astrology, it is best to buy only silver or things made of silver.  The day of Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month is known as Dhanteras.  Dhanteras is also known as Dhan Trayodashi and Dhanvantari Trayodashi.  It is believed that during the churning of the ocean, Goddess Lakshmi appeared with the Kalash, which is considered a symbol of increase in wealth and good fortune.  It was in this silver pot that the nectar came out and this is the reason why silver is also considered good for health.  Silver calms the body and mind.  Buying silver on Dhanteras is said to be a good luck factor.  It is said that the silver purchased on this day increases thirteen times.  If there is no situation to buy silver, copper or other metals can be purchased.  Gold, silver and other metals should be bought in Taurus ascendant. But buying only gold and silver on this day is not enough.  It is considered beneficial to buy something else on this day.  Among these other items, there are many things including broom, Gomti Chakra, but here broom has the most importance. Broom is considered the symbol of Goddess Lakshmi.  It is believed that buying a broom on the day of Dhanteras brings blessings to Goddess Lakshmi.  Therefore, the broom should always be kept in such a place where no one’s feet can touch it.  It is said that a broom should be bought in the evening on Dhanteras.  There are many beliefs behind buying a broom.  It is said that broom destroys poverty in the house and also frees one from debt.

According to mythology, it was written in the horoscope of King Hima’s 16-year-old son that he would die of snake bite on the fourth night of his marriage.  In such a situation, when King Hima’s son got married and the fourth day came, his wife remained awake the whole night and also kept her husband awake.  During this, she took off all her jewelery and lit a lamp and kept it near the door of the room.  When Lord Yam came in the form of a snake to take away the son of King Hima, his eyes were dazzled by the light there. Due to so much light, Yamraj could not enter inside the house and went away without taking his life.  After this the prince’s life was saved, because gold and silver jewelery saved his life, hence buying gold and silver on this day is very auspicious.  There is a similar story behind Yamdeep Daan on Dhanteras, since then lamps are lit at the door of the house to drive away evil.  It is believed that doing this destroys evil powers.  According to mythology, it is believed that gold and silver protect you from inauspicious and negative things, hence buying these precious metals on the day of Dhanteras is considered very auspicious.

Buying earthen lamps on the day of Dhanteras also has special significance.  In such a situation, buying earthen lamps on the day of Diwali is considered even more auspicious.  It is also considered right to buy batasha and kumkum for Goddess Lakshmi on this day.  Apart from this, Kamal gatta can also be purchased today.  There is a tradition of buying coriander seeds on the day of Dhanteras.  Buying coriander on the day of Dhanteras is considered a symbol of happiness and prosperity.  It is said that during the puja, offer coriander seeds to Goddess Lakshmi and later keep it in your safe.  You can also buy brass utensils on the day of Dhanteras.  Keep these utensils in the east direction of your house.  It is said that brass is very dear to Dhanvantari and buying brass on this day is considered auspicious.  Apart from this, you can also buy idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha.  There is also a good trend of buying Gomti Chakra on the day of Dhanteras.  It is advisable to buy Gomti Chakra for health and prosperity.  You can buy 11 Gomti Chakras today.  You can tie these Gomti Chakras in yellow cloth and keep them in your safe or locker.

Some people believe that the real significance of Dhanteras is the purchase of gold and silver.  But its importance is much more than money, gold, silver and jewellery.  On this day, lights are seen everywhere, delicious food is prepared in every house.  Along with Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kuber is also worshiped on the day of Dhanteras.  It is believed that Lord Kuber is the god of wealth and worshiping him pleases him and makes a person wealthy.

These are all traditions of Hindu religion.  If there is light in our mind then there will be light outside for us also.  For example, the festival of Diwali was celebrated to celebrate Ram’s return home after 14 years of exile.  Similarly, if we send away our evils every day and celebrate the arrival of good things in our heart, then every day is Diwali for us and every day is Dhanteras.
